Twenty years ago the Valero Alamo Bowl added a scholarship program to its community outreach by selecting 26 high school seniors to each receive $2,000.
For 2020, the Valero Alamo Bowl invited a record 153 winners who represented every San Antonio are high school and four-year university to share in over $1 million in scholarships.
This amount is projected to be the highest local scholarship total among all the NCAA bowl games and will bring the all-time awards to over $7.2 million.
While the winners are typically recognized on the field in the first quarter, this year’s safety protocols moved their acknowledgments to a scroll on the videowalls throughout the game.
Fortunately, there was one student able to be recognized on the field this year: Holmes High School’s Ariana Martinez. She is the first recipient of the John R. “Jack” Rogers Memorial Scholarship honoring 2004 Valero Alamo Bowl Chair Jack Rogers who passed away last May.
Selected as the applicant that most exemplifies the values as defined by Jack’s life, Ariana showed excellence in academics, athletics, leadership as well as her ability to demonstrate strength during times of adversity.
A portion of the proceeds from all Bowl events and partnerships helps fund the Valero Alamo Bowl Scholarship programs. In 2020, the program also received support from Covenant, Frost, H-E-B, NuStar Energy, Parrish & Co., PwC and Valero.
Here is the full list of the 84 high school winners of the Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarship program. The college program had 69 winners and receives matching funding from all six San Antonio universities.
