Employee Spotlight: Frankie Leal

Frankie is this year’s Communications and Digital Marketing Coordinator. He was born and raised in Alice, Texas, and moved to San Antonio after high school to attend UTSA. He graduated from UTSA in 2020 with a degree in English before going on to earn a master’s degree in Mass Communication from Texas State in 2022.

Between media planning and community relations projects, Frankie has been busy as game day fast approaches.

What is your favorite thing about your role at the Valero Alamo Bowl?

“Honestly I’ve really enjoyed the community relations aspect of the job. Going to surprise teachers with grant money, rewarding high school athletes with our scholarships, it’s great. It takes a lot of organizing and planning, but it’s pretty rewarding to give back to the community like that.”

What is your favorite thing about living in San Antonio?

“The food! It sounds funny but I grew up in a small town so there weren’t a ton of options for eating out. Here in San Antonio I feel like I’m constantly discovering new places or hearing about new spots to try out. The diversity and culture here is awesome as well, so that leads to many different styles and flavors.”

What path led you to this job?

“I saw the job posting just a week or two after I graduated from Texas State this year. My friend Sergio Ramirez was a Digital and Graphic Design Intern for the Bowl in 2019, and he said it was such a great place to work and that he loved his time there. I applied, went through the interview process, and was lucky enough to get the position. He was right! It’s a great work environment.”

What do you like about communications?

“Well it’s less about communications and more about the passion I have for sports. Since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to work in the sports industry. I worked as Sports Editor of the UTSA newspaper during my time there and really loved the sports media environment. I have a lot of respect for what these student athletes do on a daily basis, and I felt like helping guide them through media appearances, press conferences, and things like that would be super cool. I just like working with athletes and helping the masses learn about how special a lot of these kids are.”
