Houston born and Dallas raised, Yulissa Cortina grew up surrounded by several professional sports teams and loved attending games with her family, particularly Dallas Cowboys games.
Loving the atmosphere at stadiums and growing up an athlete, she knew she wanted a career in sports and sought out opportunities once she started at Texas Christian University.
A football fan, Yulissa put her knowledge to the test as a sideline reporter for TCU’s Spanish radio football broadcast. From there, she landed a public relations internship with the Dallas Sidekicks and has continued working in sports communications.
From working game days with the Dallas Mavericks to now working as the Valero Alamo Bowl’s Communications Coordinator, she’s grateful for the experience she’s gained in the early years of her career.
We sat down with Yulissa and asked her a few questions about her move to San Antonio.
What has been your favorite part about working with the Valero Alamo Bowl?
“I love getting to see how every department works. Having a small staff, you get a front row look at everyone’s roles. It also makes you understand and appreciate the work that goes into making sure our game goes off without a hitch.”
What are you most excited for in regard to game day?
“I’m excited to see all of our hard work come to fruition. We only have one shot to make this game memorable for everyone involved and we have been thinking of the tiniest of details to make it happen.”
You’ve been in San Antonio for close to three months now. Do you have any go-to spots?
“When the weather is nice, I love going to The Pearl. I’m a big sit-outside-on-a-nice-patio girl and The Pearl has lots of that, especially on the weekends. If I’m not there, I like to play pickle ball at Chicken N Pickle or head to Deol for an afternoon drink.”
