Bowl awards record number of scholarships

A record 91 high school seniors were recognized at the H-E-B scholarship recipient luncheon for their outstanding athletic and academic achievements. The Valero Alamo Bowl presented a scholarship to at least one student from 71 San Antonio area high schools.

In 2000, 26 high school seniors split $52,000 in the Valero Alamo Bowl’s inaugural year of it’s scholarship program. Today, the program has grown to award 91 High School seniors and 97 University students a combined $1.1 million in scholarships. The total is more than any other bowl game.

In addition to the luncheon, the winners will be recognized on the field at the 2022 Valero Alamo Bowl.

The 2022 Scholarship recipients are:

Francisco Alvarado, Burbank High School – Francisco is a member of the soccer team and cross-country team at Burbank High School while also participating in choir. He plans to attend Trinity University to study Pre-Law.

Nicholas Amann, NSITE High School – Nicholas is captain of the swim team at Holmes High School and is also on the varsity water polo team. He plans to attend Texas A&M University to study Public Health.

Sophia Apolinar, Fox Tech High School – Sophia is captain of the soccer team at Fox Tech and is also a member of the cross-country team. She plans to study biology at The University of Texas.

Xander Argabright, The Winston School of San Antonio – Xander is on the football team and serves as Vice President of the Rotary International Interact Club. He plans to attend to University of Texas to study Architecture.

Josiah Benavides, Harlandale STEM Early College HS – Josiah is a TECA percussion state champion and serves as treasurer of the student council. He plans to attend the University of Texas to study Digital Marketing.

Dani Bernal, Randolph High School – Dani is a four-sport athlete and a regional qualifier in both swimming and cross country. She plans to attend Northeast Lakeview College to study criminal justice and forensic science.

Thomas Beyer, MacArthur High School – Thomas is a three-year varsity soccer player who also competes in cross-country. He has also participated in theatre all four years. Thomas plans to study engineering at Texas A&M University. 

Jamerrick Brown, Young Men’s Leadership Academy – Jamerrick plays football is a 1st team all-district wide receiver. He is also captain of the track team and plans to attend Texas State University to study sports medicine and kinesiology.

Lea Caldwell, Highlands High School – Lea is the MVP and captain of her golf team and is also a track and field area qualifier. She is also the President of NHS. Lea plans to attend TCU to study business and pursue a career in law.

Julius Calhoun, Judson High School – Julius is a leader on the football team and is also first chair violin on the Orchestra. He intends to study Cyber Security at UTSA.

Brian Caloca, Veterans Memorial High School – Brian is captain of the cross-country team at Veterans Memorial High School and has Academic All-District Honors. He plans to attend the University of Texas to study computer science.

Becca Crisp, Brandeis High School – Becca is captain of the swim team at Brandeis High School and is also a regional qualifying cross-country runner. She plans to attend the University of Texas to pursue medical school.

Alejandro DeLeon, LEE High School – Alejandro is a member of the swim team at LEE High School and also serves as captain for a mountain biking team in San Antonio. He also is a cellist in the orchestra. Alejandro plans to attend Stanford University to study Aerospace Engineering.

Kylie Douglas, Communications Arts High School – Kylie is a four-year varsity member of the track team and a state qualifier. She also serves as the flute section leader for band and plans to attend the University of Texas.

Emily Dunn, San Antonio Christian High School – Emily plays basketball and golf at San Antonio Christian High School. She plans to attend Texas A&M University to study accounting.

Micah Emslie, Great Hearts Northern Oaks – Micah is a four-year varsity soccer player and captain of the Cross-Country team at Great Hearts Northern Oaks. He’s also President of the Chess Club. Micah plans to study finance at Auburn University.

Sady Espinosa, Advanced Learning Academy – Sady is captain for her cross-country team and a four-year varsity volleyball player. She also serves as secretary of the Spanish National Honor Society. She plans to attend the University of Texas to become a Physical Therapist.

Kaden Faktor, Churchill High School – Kaden is a three-year varsity football and baseball player who has earned Academic All-District honors in both sports. He is also an officer for the National Honors Society. He plans to study Biochemistry at the University of Texas.

Ryne Farber, Johnson High School – Ryne is a varsity soccer at Johnson High School and plans to attend the United States Air Force Academy.

Karinna Felsing, O’Connor High School – Karinna is a member of the state champion O’Connor softball team. Karinna plans to attend Rice University to pursue a Biology degree.

Jenna Fernandez, Holy Cross of San Antonio – Jenna is a four-year soccer player with First team Academic All-District honors. She is also part of the National Thespian Society. She plans to attend the University of Texas to study nursing. 

Leonardo Fernandez, Southwest High School – Leonardo is captain of the soccer team, a member of the cross-country team, and a class officer. He plans to study Aviation Maintenance at the University of Texas.

Lucas Fitzgerald, O’Connor High School – Lucas is captain of the tennis team and is also a three-year member of the Varsity Orchestra. He plans to study Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University.

Lauren Franco, Smithson Valley High School – Lauren is captain of the volleyball team at Edison High School. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee to study Business Management and Real Estate.

Caroline Garcia, Young Women’s Leadership Academy – Caroline is a four-year varsity volleyball player and a member of the track team. She also serves as secretary for the “Crafts for Charity” Club. Caoline plans to attend Louisiana State University to pursue a degree in Sociology.

Samantha Garcia, Warren High School – Samantha is captain of the swim team and water polo team at Warren High School. She plans to attend Texas A&M University to become a chemical engineer.

Sophie Garza, Wagner High School – Sophie is the varsity soccer captain at Wagner High School. She has first team all-district honors and was named her team’s 2022 MVP. She also servs as senior class president. Sophie plans to study Public Relations at the University of Texas.

Ally Gibbs, Saint Mary’s Hall – Ally is a four-year varsity tennis player, a member of the cross-country team, and President of the Latin Club. She plans to attend Vanderbilt University to study Biology.

Joseph Gibson, Cole High School – Joseph is a three-year varsity Basketball player and battalion commander for his school`s JROTC Program. He is also Vice President of the National Honor Society. He plans to study Computer Science at BYU.

Osso Gomez, Jefferson High School – Osso is a two-year varsity football player and serves as the class President. He plans to study film and computer science at the University of Texas.

Daniella Gonzalez, Taft High School – Daniella is a three-year varsity captain and two-year regional qualifier for Taft`s Cross-country team, a two-year captain of the track team, and she’s a member of student council and the National Honors Society. Daniella plans to attend the University of Texas to study Physical Therapy.

Avery Green, Harlandale High School – Avery is captain of the volleyball team and has all-district honors. She also serves as her class Vice President. She intends to study Health Science or Pre-Pharmacy at Baylor University. 

Kendra Grimm, Johnson High School – Kendra is a four-year letterman and captain of the volleyball team, and she’s a member of the National Honor Society. Kendra plans to attend Texas A&M University to study sports medicine.

Jack Hamil, Harlan High School – Jack is a four-year football player at Harlan high School and is also on the track team. He plans to attend UTSA to study Physical Therapy.

Jasmine Hollis, Keystone School – Jasmine is a four-year varsity basketball player and serves as her class Vice President and Vice President of the World Language Club. She plans to attend Yale University to study meteorology.  

Rebekah Jones, John Jay High School – Rebekah is a three-year varsity member of the track and field team, and is also a two-year member of Jay`s AFJROTC. She plans to attend Texas A&M to study Construction Science.

Norelle Jowers, Madison High School – Norelle is a four-year member of the basketball team with Academic All-District Honors and a three-year member of the band. She plans to Major in Marketing or Health Education at Trinity University.

Jonathan Largoza, Saint Mary’s Hall – Jonathan is a point guard on the basketball team and captain of the cross-country team. He’s also Team Captain of the Science Bowl Club. Jonathan plans to attend John Hopkins University to study Biomedical Engineering.

Yadhira Lerma, Wagner High School – Yadhira is captain and MVP of the wrestling team at Wagner High School. She plans to attend Mercyhurst University to study Forensic Anthropology.

Carter Lewis, New Braunfels High School – Carter is a four-year basketball and baseball player and serves as captain of the basketball team at New Braunfels High School. He plans on attending Texas Lutheran University to study Business.

Lauren Liguez, Brennan High School – Lauren is captain of the soccer team with 1st team all-district honors. She plans to attend the University of Texas to study architecture.

Humberto Limon, South San Antonio High School – Humberto is a three-year member of both the basketball and cross-country team. He plans to attend The University of Texas to study Education.

Connor Lindsey, Clemens High School – Connor is a member of the varsity tennis team and serves as the section leader for the drumline in his band. Connor plans to attend Texas Tech University.

Stacy Lujan, Somerset High School – Stacey serves a Colonel for Somerset High School’s Silver Dancers and is also class president. Stacy plans to attend the University of Texas to study Business Management.

Gabrielle Luna, Incarnate Word High School – Gabrielle is a four-year varsity member in cross-country and track and serves as a student ambassador. She plans to study Psychology at Boston University.

Vina Manouchehri, Marshall High School – Vina is the captain for her school’s swim and water polo team and a class officer. Vina plans to study pre-medicine at the University of Incarnate Word.

Matthew McCrory, San Antonio Christian High School – Matthew is MVP of the swim team and a four-year swimmer with Academic All-State honors. He plans to study cyber security at Texas A&M University.

Conley Brennan McKenna, Alamo Heights High School – Conley is starting quarterback on his football team and a four-year varsity member of the lacrosse team. Conley plans to study economics and Pre-Law at Washington University in St. Louis.

Fabian Medina, McCollum High School – Fabian is the co-captain of the state champion McCollum band drumline. He plans to attend the University of Texas to study computer science.

Emmanuelle Mefrige, Providence High School – Emmanuelle holds a leadership position on her nationally recognized JROTC’s Army drill team and is a four-year school ambassador. Emmanuelle plans to study physical therapy at the University of Texas.

Nathan Min, Randolph High School – Nathan is a is a two-time all-district offensive lineman as well as team captain for the football team. He is also captain of the powerlifting team and competes in track and field. He plans to study sports medicine at Stanford University. 

Isaac Mokrane, Steele High School – Isaac is a four-year member of the track and field team at Steele as well as a four-year member of the International Thespian society. He plans to study criminal justice at Sam Houston State University.

John Moncada, Brackenridge High School – John is a two-time regional qualifier for cross country and is also captain of the track and field team. He also serves as an athletic trainer for volleyball and soccer. John plans to study nutrition at Trinity University.

Carson Moore, TMI Episcopal School – Carson is a three-year captain of TMI’s soccer team and a three-time member of the Academic All-State team. He is also Battalion Commander of the JROTC. He plans on studying Biology at Vanderbilt University.

Eric Morales, Burbank High School – Eric is a four-year member of the wrestling team and a district heavyweight champion. He plans on studying education or political science at Oklahoma State University.

Raquel Morales, Young Women’s Leadership Academy – Raquel is captain of the volleyball team and a member of both the Academic All-District and 1st team all-district teams. She was also selected as “Setter of the year.” She plans to study sociology and also continue her volleyball career at Prairie View A&M University.

Miles Moxley, Southwest High School – Miles is a regional qualifier for both the track and field and cross-country teams at Southwest High School and is also president of the student government. Miles plans to study economics at the University of Texas to pursue a career in politics.

Anthony Muniz, LEE High School – Anthony is captain of the football team at LEE High School, competes on the track team and plays guitar for the mariachi band. He plans to study computer science at UTSA.

Kieran Norris, Alamo Heights High School – Kieran is the captain of the volleyball team, defensive MVP for the softball team, and violin section leader for her orchestra. She plans to study international relations, business economics and pre-law at Texas A&M University. 

Bolu Odumosu, Clark High School – Bolu is captain of the basketball team and has 1st team All-Academic honors. She is also captain of her decathlon and quiz bowl teams. Bolu plans on studying pre-medicine or psychology at Stanford University.

John O’Neal, Sam Houston High School – John is an all-district caliber point guard at Sam Houston High School. He plans to study animal science at Texas State University. 

Justin Orosco, Sam Houston High School – Justin is a three-sport athlete and is captain of both the football team and the golf team. He plans to study education at the University of Houston Victoria.

Nathaniel Ortega, Edison High School – Nathaniel is a member of the Edison High School wrestling team and is the winner of a “best supporting actor” award for UIL theatre competition. He plans on studying psychology at UTSA.

Litzy Ortega, Highlands High School – Litzy is captain of the softball team and has All-Academic team honors. She is also a four-year volleyball player. She plans to study pre-vet medicine at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi.

Aliana Ouellette, Christian School at Castle Hills – Aliana is a five-sport athlete. She is captain of the volleyball and basketball team and has qualified for state in golf, swimming, cross country, and band. She plans on studying nursing at Texas Tech University.

Velia Perez, Kennedy High School – Velia was named MVP of her softball team and has all-district honors. She also competes in basketball and cheerleading. Velia plans to study nursing at San Antonio College.

Terrycinia Pointer, Fox Tech High School – Terrycinia is a two-year member of the basketball team and is also a student council officer. She plans to study nursing at the University of Texas.

Zachary Poupart, Great Hearts Monte Vista – Zachary is captain of the swim team and a two-time district champion. He also serves as the Drama Class set director. Zackary plans to study Cyber Security at Baylor University.

Natalia Ramirez, Judson High School – Natalia is a three-sport athlete in cross country, track, and soccer. She is the trumpet section leader in band and is the first-chair trumpet player. She plans to study music education at Texas State University.

Nikolas Ramirez, Southside High School – Nikolas competes in both track and cross-country and is an area qualifier for marching band. He plans to study mechanical engineering at the University of Texas.

Anselmo Ramos, Lanier High School – Anselmo is an all-district football player and vice president of the student body at Lanier. He plans to attend the University of Texas to study physical education.

Solomon Ramos-Benavides, Central Catholic High School – Solomon is captain of the basketball team and has been selected to multiple all-district and all-state teams. He is also the vice president of student council. Solomon plans to study journalism at Baylor University. 

Arhan Rao, Health Careers High School – Arhan is the team captain for the tennis team and has served as an intern for four years doing cancer research and shadowing a multitude of physicians. He is the Vice President of HOSA Future Health Professionals. He plans to study pre-medicine at the University of Texas. 

Ashley Renner, International School of the Americas – Ashley is a four-year volleyball player and a member of the track team. She plans to attend Wake Forest University to study pre-medicine.

Christopher Rodriguez, Holmes High School – Christopher is captain of the cross-country team and is also a member of the football team. He plans to study apparel design and product development at Baylor University.

Mallory Rojas, Memorial High School – Mallory plays volleyball and soccer at Memorial high school and is the President of the National Honor Society. She plans to study nursing at the University of Incarnate Word. 

Isaiah Romanski, Brennan High School – Isaiah is on the football team at Brennan High School and a member of National Honor Society. He plans to study computer science and cyber security at UTSA.

Roman Salazar, Roosevelt High School – Roman is the captain of both the football and wrestling teams and has earned all-district honors in both sports, qualifying for state in wrestling. He plans to study electrical engineering at the University of Texas.

Andres Sanchez, Atonement Catholic Academy – Andres is captain of the soccer team and an MVP in both track and cross country. He is also Vice President of the National Honor Society. He plans to study electrical engineering at Texas A&M University.

William Sanders, CAST Tech High School – William is a four-year basketball player and serves as the student council president. He plans study computer science at Rice University.

Rachel Sanders, Lutheran High School – Rachel is a four-sport athlete and has earned all-state honors in both basketball and volleyball, as well as academic all-state honors in softball. She plans to study allied health at Texas A&M University. 

Juliet Sencion, Stevens High School – Juliet is the captain of the tennis team and has Academic All-District honors. She is also captain of the debate team and President of the Environmental Science Club. Juliet plans to study computer science at Harvard University.

Drew Sharpstene, Churchill High School – Drew is captain of the track team and an all-district basketball player at Churchill high school. He plans to study business at Rice University.

Simone Sheehan, Stacey High School – Simone is a three-year volleyball player, first chair French horn in band, and Student Council President. Simone plans to study art at Hardin-Simmons University.

Natalie Sherman, Reagan High School – Natalie is a tennis player at Reagan High School and was a team leader for the NASA sponsored program “Lunar Cave Analog Test Sites.” She plans to attend Vanderbilt University to study Biomedical Engineering.

William Sulentich, Antonian High School– William is a two-time cross country state champion and an all-district member of the track team. He plans to study at the University of San Antonio to become a Physician Assistant.

Eduardo Torres, Antonian High School – Eduardo is a four-year member of the varsity cross country team and is President of the Speech and Debate Club. He plans to attend Franciscan University of Steubenville to study Religion and Philosophy. 

Jayleane Valverde, Southwest Legacy High School – Jayleane plays volleyball and basketball at Southwest Legacy, earning Academic All-District honors for both sports and also qualifying for area in shot put. She plans to study Pre-Law at Baylor University.

Isabella Vidal, East Central High School – Isabella is a four-year member of East Central`s Softball Team and has Academic All-District Honors. She plans to study to become a Physical Therapist at Concordia University.

Logan Wilson, Roosevelt High School – Logan is a four-year wrestling team member and is also a world champion in karate. He plans to study Computer Science and Cybersecruity at Cornell University.

Bradyn Zingelmann, Brandeis High School – Bradyn is captain of the Brandeis Football team and has all-district and all-star honors. He is also a member of the track team. He plans to study at Trinity University to become a fire safety engineer.
